Kansas City Chiefs feel-good story set to end as Patrick Mahomes is likely to lose an offensive weapon

There was a clear plan that Kansas City Chiefs general manager Brett Veach had for the team to guide them through a crucial offseason. Although his job wasn’t an easy one, it was made apparent what the team needed following a brutal Super Bowl loss that exposed their weaknesses. That allowed Veach to get to work, especially at certain positions.

The defense didn’t need a lot of turnover. That side of the ball was arguably the main reason the Chiefs even made the Super Bowl last season. The offense was a different story. It became clear that the offensive line needed a major shakeup, and it definitely got it in free agency and the draft. The other offensive positions weren’t too far behind the offensive line, though. Veach made sure to address everything, making several moves to get weapons for Patrick Mahomes.

There has been plenty of movement at wide receiver, as the team re-signed Hollywood Brown and JuJu Smith-Schuster, drafted Jalen Royals, signed free agent Tyquan Thornton and signed UDFA Elijhah Badger. There are now a lot of wideouts on the roster, which could lead to the release of a former college football star who made an incredible comeback to the sport.

Justyn Ross firmly on Chiefs roster bubble heading into 2025 season

Justyn Ross, who has been with the Chiefs since signing as a UDFA in 2022, is currently buried on Kansas City’s depth chart. With all of the new talent coming in, he might be one of the odd men out. Ross has only appeared in 14 total games for the Chiefs, catching just six passes for 53 yards.

Excitement for Ross was particularly high when the Chiefs signed him. Ross saw his college football career cut short due to a neck and spine injury. Doctors believed he wouldn’t be able to play again, but he came back for one more season, although he wasn’t the same player as the star who blossomed as a freshman for the national championship winning Clemson Tigers.

The injury and one-year layoff clearly sapped many of Ross’ talents. It’s a miracle that he was even able to come back from it and carve out a career in the NFL, but he may have to latch on elsewhere if the Chiefs’ offseason moves are anything to go off of.
