The 2025 season was at risk of getting a bit out of control for the Kansas City Chiefs through five games. Sitting at 2-3 after a loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars in a game they were ahead in, tough questions were being asked of Andy Reid‘s team. Patrick Mahomes was playing at an elite level, but the team’s weaknesses were apparent.
An impressive home win over the surging Detroit Lions got the Chiefs back on track before they turned into their old selves in a dominant 31-0 victory over division rivals, the Las Vegas Raiders. After such a good win, there shouldn’t be any nitpicking from fans or analysts. But something did happen in the game that needs to be addressed by the front office.
Omarr Norman-Lott, the Chiefs’ second round defensive tackle from the 2025 NFL Draft, suffered a torn ACL that will knock him out for the rest of the season. Norman-Lott was a role player, as he was playing 27% of the Chiefs’ defensive snaps, but the team now loses a body at one of their thinnest positions.
Could Chiefs trade for Khalen Saunders after Omarr Norman-Lott injury?
Coming into the 2025 season, there were already concerns about the Chiefs’ interior defensive line. Aside from All-Pro Chris Jones, Derrick Nnadi is ranked as one of the worst defensive linemen in the league by Pro Football Focus. Jerry Tillery hasn’t been much better. With the position thinning out and the depth players not performing, Lyle Graversen of Arrowhead Addict has suggested a trade for a former fan favorite, Khalen Saunders.
Saunders hasn’t played since Week 1 for the Jacksonville Jaguars, who he was traded to weeks before the season began. Clearly, Jacksonville’s coaching staff doesn’t have a role in mind for Saunders. That could potentially lead to Kansas City reuniting with Saunders by way of a trade. It likely wouldn’t take much to get him.
Saunders played four seasons with the Chiefs before signing with the New Orleans Saints in 2023. In his final season with the Chiefs, Saunders notched a career-high 3.5 sacks. He also sacked Jalen Hurts in Kansas City’s Super Bowl LVII victory over the Philadelphia Eagles.
