Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid recently honored the retirement of long-time assistant coach Andy Hill, affectionately known as “Mr. Missouri,” following his sudden departure from the team.

Hill, who had been with the Chiefs since 2020, announced his retirement just days before the start of mandatory minicamp, leaving a significant void in the team’s special teams unit.

A storied career in Missouri football

Before joining the Chiefs, Hill had an illustrious career at the University of Missouri, where he played wide receiver for four seasons in the 1980s.

After completing his playing days, he transitioned into coaching, beginning as a volunteer graduate assistant at SMU. Hill‘s coaching journey took him to Hutchinson Community College before he returned to Missouri, where he spent 24 seasons, becoming the longest-serving coach in the program’s history.

His deep knowledge of the game and commitment to developing players made him a beloved figure in Missouri football.

In 2020, Hill brought his expertise to the Chiefs as their Assistant Special Teams Coach. During his tenure, he contributed to the team’s success, including two Super Bowl victories and four total Super Bowl appearances.

His role in shaping the Chiefs‘ special teams was instrumental in their championship runs.

Hill‘s retirement was met with an outpouring of support from the Chiefs organization and fans alike. In a heartfelt tribute, Coach Andy Reid expressed his admiration for Hill‘s contributions: “Andy retired to golf, fish, and hunt. He did a great job when he was here. He’s really ‘Mr. Missouri’… He knows everybody… We’ll miss him.”

Hill also shared his gratitude in a message on social media: “Thank you, Chiefs. Coach Andy Reid, Dave Toub and the wonderful coaches and players that I was honored to be a small part of such a class organization. Top to bottom, the best in the NFL! Our family says THANK YOU!”

The bond between Hill and the Chiefs‘ staff goes back decades. Hill and Chiefs special teams coordinator Dave Toub have a long-standing friendship that dates back to the 1990s at Missouri, where Toub was helping finish Hill‘s basement for some extra money.

Their shared history and mutual respect have been a cornerstone of the Chiefs‘ special teams success.

As Hill embarks on his retirement, he leaves behind a legacy of dedication, mentorship, and a deep love for the game. His impact on the Chiefs organization and Missouri football will be remembered for years to come.
