Kai Trump’s rough LPGA opening round raises eyebrows at Pelican

Kai Trump arrived at the first tee at Pelican Golf Club with a crowd that felt more like a Sunday afternoon than an early-round debut. Cameras clicked, spectators leaned over the ropes, and an unusual buzz followed the 18-year-old into her first appearance at The Annika.

The day started badly for her. She opened with two bogeys and a double bogey in her first three holes, a stretch that immediately tested her composure. She managed to settle down briefly with a par on the fourth and later picked up a birdie on the par-5 seventh, but another double bogey on the ninth sent her to the turn with a 7-over 42. The score placed her near the bottom of the leaderboard after the first half of her round.

Trump knew nerves would play a role in her first LPGA start. She said she relied on advice from her grandfather, President Donald Trump, who told her to enjoy the moment and avoid putting extra pressure on herself.

My grandpa pretty much told me go out there and have fun. Just don’t get nervous. Try my best not to

Kai Trump’s debut overshadowed by crowds, criticism and star-level support

While the scorecard was rough, the environment around Trump’s round created a unique storyline. Her sponsor’s exemption into the event had already sparked debate among critics and supporters alike. Even so, the interest was undeniable. The Tampa Bay Times reported that dozens gathered at the driving range before her 12:32 p.m. tee time, a crowd size rarely seen for a young amateur.

Family was present throughout the day. Golfweek reported that her mother, Vanessa Trump, followed from the 18th fairway with University of Miami assistant coach Jim Garren. There was also an added element of star power. Tiger Woods, Vanessa’s boyfriend and one of the most influential figures in golf history, offered Trump words of encouragement before the round. She described him as the best golfer in the world and said his message focused on staying relaxed and letting the day unfold naturally.

Despite the shakiness of her front nine, Trump showed flashes of potential. Her swing speed, pacing, and ability to regroup between shots gave her supporters something to hold onto. Several LPGA players have noted that first-time nerves can derail even the most prepared rookies, and adjusting to the pressure often takes more than a single round.

With three days remaining and more calm weather expected, Trump has time to reset and deliver a stronger finish. The Annika continues through Sunday at Pelican Golf Club, giving her room to fight back from her difficult start.
