Justin Thomas, ranked eighth in the world, has undergone back surgery due to a herniated disc, which will prevent him from playing in the early tournaments of next season.
Thomas, 32, who won the PGA Championship in 2017 and 2022, underwent surgery at a New York hospital due to the discomfort he had been suffering in his hip for several months and which forced him to be sidelined in recent weeks as the symptoms worsened, as he explained on his social networks.
An MRI scan revealed the diagnosis of the disc problem that required treatment and undergo a microdiscectomy, from which he has already been discharged.
“The next few weeks will be spent resting before beginning rehabilitation. I have a great team behind me and I trust them completely to make a full recovery,” said the Kentucky player, who has played four times with the United States team in the Ryder Cup.
As for when he might return to competition, Thomas was cautious: “I don’t have any set date for my return, nor for any tournament. While I will miss some events in early 2026, I want to be prudent and patient so that my disc heals completely and I don’t have problems again. I am very fortunate that golf allows us to play at a high level for a long time, and that is what I plan to do so that I can play injury-free in the future”.
