Justin Herbert’s transformation propels the Chargers to the top of the AFC West

Few could have predicted that through the first three weeks of the 2025 season, the Los Angeles Chargers would sit atop the AFC West standings. While subtle signs were hinting at the team’s potential, no one expected Justin Herbert to be performing at such an elite and commanding level.

It’s not only the offensive firepower that has driven this impressive start. The Chargers’ defense has also emerged as a formidable force, shutting down opponents and complementing Herbert’s explosive play. This combination has turned Los Angeles into one of the most balanced and dangerous teams in the league.

The changes that fueled Herbert’s growth

The shift that sparked Herbert’s transformation might appear minor to some observers, but its impact has been significant. The quarterback’s stellar performances over the opening three games are proof of just how effective the adjustment has been.

Offensive coordinator Greg Roman made only a handful of changes, but he identified areas that would maximize Herbert’s strengths. His vision has proven correct, as the offense now operates with remarkable efficiency and confidence.

Roman is well-known for favoring ground-and-pound schemes, a philosophy he successfully implemented during his time with Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens. Upon joining the Chargers, many assumed Roman would maintain that same run-heavy approach, especially given Herbert’s own willingness and ability to run when needed.

However, Roman surprised everyone by evolving his strategy. Toward the end of the 2024 season, he began emphasizing the passing game far more than before. The results were immediate: Los Angeles surged into the postseason, and this year, that momentum has carried over, with the Chargers looking more dynamic than ever.

Three weeks of Herbert showcasing his arm strength

Herbert’s numbers reflect his evolution. Over the first three games, he has thrown for 860 yards, with six touchdown passes and just a single interception. His precision and decision-making have elevated the entire offense, and his leadership has been crucial during tight moments.

Up next for Herbert and the Chargers is a matchup against the struggling New York Giants, a game many expect will feature a barrage of passes and another standout performance from the star quarterback.

Mario Cristobal, Herbert’s former college coach at Oregon, once described the quarterback’s relentless drive for excellence:

Man, I think he had one B+ in his entire time at Oregon, and I kind of messed with him about it one time; he didn’t speak to me for a week.

He’s an absolute perfectionist. He could run like the wind, which was exhibited by the NFL, but the absolute most insane specimen as a quarterback. Elite family, elite human being, can’t say enough great things about him. Humble as can be also.

With the Chargers undefeated and Herbert thriving, optimism is soaring in Los Angeles. If current trends continue, the team may not only maintain its perfect record after facing the Giants but also establish itself as a legitimate contender in the AFC.
