This Thursday, Omar Chavez and Misael ‘Chino’ Rodriguez offered the press conference prior to their fight, this Saturday to be held in San Luis Potosi, Mexico. The fight is surrounded by controversy, after the ‘Chino‘ left Omar planted in October last year, accusing that the fight was clearly rigged in favor of his rival
On that occasion, the bronze medallist at Rio 2016 did not show up for the fight, accusing Omar Chavez of being 10 kilos overweight after the weigh-in, although within the limits set by the Mexico City Boxing Commission. Since then, Chavez Sr. has branded him a “coward”
That’s why the face-off on this day was heated and even Julio Cesar Chavez, who was present to support his son, lost his head at Rodriguez’s comments and ended up stealing the show, forgetting that he is just a spectator
What did Julio Cesar Chavez say about ‘Chino’ Rodriguez?
In fact, it was at the beginning of the conference when Julio took the microphone and when he spoke he ‘got heated’ and went against the ‘Chino’
With all due respect to Chino, he should stop being an asshole
He added: “The fighters have to make the weight, Omar doesn’t care that Chino goes up whatever he has to go up in weight, because he has to hydrate, because he has to eat, just like my son. All bodies are different. Imagine, that in all the fights I had for the world championship I would have put some clause against fighters much stronger than me, at the time of the weigh-in I looked at them skinny and at the time of the fight, they changed me”.
He even used his most flowery language to criticise his son’s rival: “The fighter can eat whatever the hell he wants, why is the other fighter going to put conditions on the weight?”
He then went against Chino Rodriguez’s weight in boxing and ended up minimizing his career:
“I do not agree, as if he were the important one, as if to say ‘I am in charge here’ and leave the fight lying. That is not professionalism, that is not being a fighter, why do you get into the ring if you are going to have issues with the weight? I hope that just as the two of them are talking it will be a great fight, I am confident, it will be hard for both of them. But with all due respect Misael, with all due respect Chino, I think we’re going to fuck you.”
Prior to the first fight, both fighters had already exchanged indirect jabs, after Julio S. himself called Misael a “fatass“.
Details of the fight on Saturday, January 25
The fight will take place this Sunday, January 25, at the Arena Potosi. The original clash was scheduled to take place in October 2024 at the Plaza de Toros Vicente Segura in Pachuca, Hidalgo, but was canceled at the last minute, when Rodriguez did not even get into the ring and left Omar Chavez facing the annoyance of those in attendance
After this incident, promoter Zanfer Boxing sought to reschedule the fight as soon as possible and ensure that all established regulations are met.
