The long-awaited return of Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and Omar Chavez to the ring will have to wait a few more weeks. The Chavez family confirmed that the event where both will share the bill will finally take place on January 24, 2026 in San Luis Potosi, and not in December as initially announced.

The change of date is not due to sporting reasons, but personal ones. In an interview with Adela Micha for La Saga, Julio Cesar Chavez himself explained that his son Omar is currently in one of his rehabilitation clinics, which is why they decided to postpone the event. “He is aware that he messed up, he is going to be there for at least a month. While he is going to prepare because Julio and he are going to fight. It was going to be in December, but I postponed it so that they are both well,” said the former world champion.

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. returns after his legal problems in the United States

For his part, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. is going through a stage of personal and sporting reconstruction. The eldest son of the legend is looking to resume his career after the loss to Jake Paul and the legal problems that led to him being deported from the United States. He is currently on probation in Mexico, focused on his preparation to return to the ring in optimal condition.

This will be his first fight on Mexican soil since his return, a fact that has generated excitement among boxing fans. The evening in San Luis Potosi will mark the beginning of a new era for the Chavez clan, which is looking to regain its sporting legacy while facing the personal challenges that have affected the family in recent years.

Omar Chavez continues his rehabilitation process in Tijuana

Meanwhile, Omar Chavez remains hospitalized in his father’s clinic in Tijuana, after suffering a relapse. According to Julio Cesar Chavez, the younger brother had a new episode of marijuana use, which led to his immediate hospitalization.

The former champion’s priority is for both sons to be physically and emotionally ready for the January event. “First is their health. Then boxing,” Chavez emphasized.

With both in the process of recovery and under the close watch of their father, the Chavez clan hopes that January 2026 will mark the sporting rebirth of Mexico’s most emblematic boxing family.
