Despite having recently been linked to a legal process for alleged links to organized crime and arms trafficking, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. will return to the ring this year. At a press conference, the president of the World Boxing Council (WBC), Mauricio Sulaiman, together with the legendary Julio Cesar Chavez, confirmed that the junior will have a fight on December 13 as part of a commemorative event.

The return of the former champion is part of the Guadalupano Tournament, a WBC initiative that seeks to pay homage to the faith and tradition of Mexican boxing. “Julio, my son, is going to reappear on December 13 and he has told me that it is going to be something really cool,” said Chavez Sr. at the official presentation.

WBC to honor Chavez Jr. with special belt for his personal recovery

The event not only marks his sporting return, but also the recognition of his fight outside the ring, Mauricio Sulaiman explained that the WBC will design a special Guadalupano belt for this fight, in honor of the recovery process that the junior has gone through after facing addiction problems.

The WBC president also praised Chavez Jr.’s strength by saying that “he has been a hero for everyone after his addictions. He has gone through a great recovery process and we are with him in his corner”. This will be an exhibition fight, designed not only as a sporting competition, but as a symbol of a new stage in his personal and professional life.

Julio Cesar Chavez defends his son and denies links to drug trafficking

At the same conference, the “Great Mexican Champion” firmly addressed the legal accusations that have surrounded his son. He assured that this whole comeback is motivated by the desire to keep him focused and away from bad decisions: “I did it so that he stays clean and that people see that my son has always been dedicated to boxing. My son has never been a drug dealer or anything like that.”

Chavez Jr., who was recently deported from the United States and obtained probation in Mexico, is already training for his return. After a tough loss to Jake Paul and his subsequent departure from the ring, many thought his career was over. However, this fight could change that perception and give him a new opportunity in front of his home crowd.
