Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., the controversial former boxer, is already in Mexico after his arrest in the United States on July 2, 2025.

According to the history in the National Register of Detentions, the son of the legendary boxer Julio Cesar Chavez, already appears as transferred to a prison in Hermosillo, Sonora. This file was issued by the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection.

Why was Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. arrested?

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr was arrested in the United States on charges of illegal possession of a firearm along with other charges, just as he was seeking to legalize his stay in that country. He has since remained in custody while his legal status was resolved.

In Mexico, the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) accuses him of alleged involvement in organized crime and links to the Sinaloa Cartel, accusations that led him to be admitted to a high-security prison.

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.’s move to Hermosillo

According to the official document of the National Registry of Detentions, Chavez Jr. was handed over at the border at 11:53 a.m. on Monday, August 18, and then taken by ministerial officers to the Sonoran capital. He is currently being held at the Federal Center for Social Rehabilitation in Hermosillo (Cefereso), where he will remain under strict security measures while his judicial process is underway.

Federal sources confirmed that in recent weeks, the former boxer had repeatedly tried to seek protection in Mexico, without success. The federal justice system denied his legal appeals, which allowed the deportation and immediate imprisonment in Mexican territory.

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.: From boxing promise to legal process

Chavez Jr., 39, was one of the most media-savvy names in Mexican boxing in the past decade. In 2011, he won the World Middleweight Championship of the World Boxing Council (WBC), becoming the first son of a world champion to win a recognized title.

However, his sports career faded amid controversies, defeats and off-field problems. In recent years he faced episodes of substance abuse, sporting sanctions and family disputes, which definitely took him away from the ring.

What’s next for Julio Cesar Chavez Jr?

The FGR reported that the former boxer will face a trial on charges of organized crime, among others. If his responsibility is confirmed, he could receive a sentence of up to 40 years in prison.

For now, he will remain in custody in Hermosillo while the investigation progresses, awaiting further court hearings.
