Julio César Chávez Jr. arrested in Los Angeles over alleged ties to the Sinaloa Cartel

In a shocking turn of events, scandal once again surrounds Julio César Chávez Jr., son of the legendary world champion. The boxer was arrested in Los Angeles, California, just days after his defeat to Jake Paul at the Honda Center in Anaheim. The news broke on the morning of Thursday, July 3, sending shockwaves through both the sports world and the legal sphere.

Initially, the reasons behind his arrest were unclear, though unofficial reports pointed to a potential immigration issue that could result in his imminent deportation to Mexico. Journalist Andrea Escalona revealed on the television program Hoy that Chávez Jr. had been “detained moments ago” and that “no charges had been confirmed.”

U.S. authorities confirm Chávez Jr.’s deportation process

A few hours later, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) ended the speculation by confirming that Chávez Jr. had been arrested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on July 2. According to the official statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), the boxer is currently undergoing an expedited deportation process due to his irregular immigration status.

However, the situation took a darker turn when U.S. authorities revealed that Chávez Jr. is under investigation for alleged ties to the Sinaloa Cartel-raising the stakes significantly. “This alleged Sinaloa Cartel affiliate has an outstanding arrest warrant in Mexico for suspected involvement in organized crime and the trafficking of weapons, ammunition, and explosives,” the statement read.

Family ties to Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán

Chávez Jr.’s legal troubles are further complicated by his family connections. He is married to Frida Muñoz, the former partner of Édgar Guzmán López, son of notorious drug lord Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán. This makes Chávez Jr. the stepfather of Frida Sofía Guzmán, a direct granddaughter of the Sinaloa Cartel’s infamous leader.

Although there is no confirmed evidence of Chávez Jr.’s direct involvement in criminal activities, his close ties to the Guzmán family and his prior legal issues-including a 2024 charge for illegal weapons possession-have only strengthened suspicions linking him to organized crime.

Chávez Jr.’s future remains uncertain

As the legal proceedings against him unfold, Chávez Jr.’s fate hangs in the balance. Mexican authorities may request his extradition so he can face the charges tied to his arrest warrant. Should his alleged links to the Sinaloa Cartel be confirmed, this would mark one of the most explosive scandals in recent Mexican sports history.

This developing case could carry major legal and media consequences, not only for Chávez Jr. but also for the global reputation of Mexican boxing.
