Julio César Chávez Jr. recently admitted that Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez, whom he faced in 2017, is the best boxer of the moment. However, the Son of the Legend pointed out that thanks to him, many boxers have earned huge amounts of money.

Chávez Jr. also mentioned that it never bothered him that his career is compared to Canelo’s, who will fight William Scull on May 3 to reclaim the undisputed 168-pound title.

Chávez Jr. Recognizes Canelo, But…

In a recent media interview, Chávez Jr. didn’t hesitate to acknowledge that Canelo is the top boxer today, holding three out of the four super middleweight titles and signing lucrative contracts.

However, he took the opportunity to remind everyone that he played a crucial role in bringing boxing back to free television.

“Maybe I’m not the best (boxer), but I’m not the worst either. I’m the one who brought boxing back to free TV, and now there’s a lot of money, many boxers are earning,” stated Julio César Chávez Jr.

He continued, “Canelo is the best, a great boxer, and that’s where the rivalry started. It doesn’t affect me.”

How Did Chávez Jr. vs. Canelo Álvarez End?

Canelo Álvarez and Julio César Chávez Jr. faced off on May 6, 2017, at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The fight lasted 12 rounds.

On that occasion, Saúl won by unanimous decision (all three judges scored it 120-108), and he went on to bigger matchups, while the Junior’s career declined for various reasons until he left the sport in 2021, only to return in 2024.

Canelo Álvarez’s Next Fight and Saudi Arabia Debut

Canelo Álvarez is preparing to fight for the first time in Saudi Arabia as part of an agreement with the country’s sports organizers, earning millions of dollars for this bout.
