The controversy with Julio Cesar Chavez and his approach to several of the most famous criminal leaders of recent decades in Mexico is revived with new statements from the former boxer.

In an interview with Adela Micha, the man considered to be the best Mexican boxer in history recalled how he was sought after by the bosses of the drug cartels in Sinaloa in his glory years in the ring.

JC Chavez: “Better to make friends than enemies”

During his years of success as a boxer, JC Chavez always lived in Culiacan, while criminal cells were being established in Sinaloa by the likes of El Chapo Guzman, Mayo Zambada, Amado Carrillo and other drug traffickers.

“Very well, he is a very good friend of mine (Ismael El Mayo Zambada). A very respectful man, you know? He used to send for me… ‘come and see me, you bastard’. ‘No, no, go to hell’, I tell him. I have met them all… Amado Carrillo, everybody, and they are very fine people. Well, at least with me. The rest, I don’t know what they do.

They used to send for me, two or three SUVs full of armed people would arrive, ‘the boss wants to meet you’. Better to make friends than enemies… (Being) a friend doesn’t mean that you are.

“I never received money from them, I never worked for them. They treated me well for what I represented, nothing more,” he told the journalist’s channel La Saga.

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.’s scandal

The statements of the Cesar del Boxeo come while his son Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. is facing a process against him for alleged links with the Sinaloa Cartel, according to the Attorney General’s Office.

Chavez Jr. is free while the judicial process takes place and would be in preparation to return to fight after his defeat against Jake Paul on June 28.
