Juan Soto’s calf injury: How big a blow for the Mets?

The New York Mets got a major scare when Juan Soto went down with a calf injury. Losing their superstar was a real fear among fans after he exited Friday’s game, but the outlook is now becoming much more encouraging.

An MRI revealed that Soto is dealing with a mild strain in his right calf. According to the player himself, it feels significantly better than it did on Friday. He now awaits a reevaluation once the team returns to New York.

Caution is key with Juan Soto

With the season still just 10 games old, the New York Mets are choosing to be extremely careful and prudent with their star player. Calf injuries are notoriously tricky, and poor management can easily lead to a setback.

Most of the time, these injuries are resolved with rest and proper treatment. After a follow-up examination scheduled for Tuesday, the organization will have a clearer timeline for Juan Soto’s return.

The Mets’ lineup without Juan Soto

Depending on the decision made by manager Carlos Mendoza, Juan Soto could be placed on the injured list before rejoining the team during their upcoming road trip to Los Angeles.

In that scenario, players like Tyrone Taylor and Brett Baty would see increased playing time in the outfield, while Mark Vientos could get more at-bats taking advantage of his strong form – either as the designated hitter or covering first base if Jorge Polanco needs to manage his workload due to Achilles tendinitis.

Additionally, the schedule works in the Mets’ favor, with upcoming home series against the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Oakland Athletics. Soto’s absence would not be critical during these matchups, allowing the team to handle his recovery with caution and ensure he returns at 100% for the rest of the season.
