Juan Soto encounters an unexpected surprise that will drive Mets fans crazy in one of the franchise’s toughest moments

The New York Mets won nine of their first 11 games in June. Imposing and dominant, the Queens nine managed to pull away by almost six games from their closest pursuers in the National League East, just what fans expected from a franchise that has invested hundreds of millions of dollars to be competitive. However, after that winning streak, everything has fallen apart for the team managed by Carlos Mendoza

Since June 13, the Mets have lost 14 of their 18 games, so they have lost the lead in their division to the Phillies. In this span, they are the worst team in Major League Baseball, even behind the Chicago White Sox or the Colorado Rockies, two teams that are aiming to surpass 100 losses this season

The debacle of their pitchers has been total, to the point that they have allowed more than 100 runs in just 18 games, for a disastrous ERA of 6.24. They also have 86 walks and have hit 21 home runs. A disaster of great magnitude that no one expected, especially considering that until June 12 it was the best team in MLB in average earned runs (2.80) and wins (45)

Not even Soto can stop the fall

A worrying point for New Yorkers is that they have fallen into their worst moment of 2025 just as Juan Soto has begun to perform at the height of his $765 million contract. The Dominican had a slow start, but in June he hit 11 home runs, the third most in a month by a Mets player

Soto drove in 20 runs, hit 14 extra-base hits and posted an offensive line (Average/On-base percentage/Slugging) of .322/.474/.722. His OPS went up to 1.196 – the best in the majors in June – a substantial change from his first two months with the Mets, which he finished with an OPS of .770.

With that performance, Juan Soto was named National League Player of the Month, an award he had never won in his career. In addition, he became only the fourth Mets player to win the award in the last 15 years. In this period, the only members of the franchise to have won it were David Wright (June 2010), Eduardo Escobar (September 2022) and Pete Alonso (April 2025).

This is what the Mets expect from their big star, who cannot afford to go through bad times after signing the largest contract in the history of professional sports in the United States.

Individual awards are important in baseball, but Juan Soto would surely give away all the accolades he has won for his performance to exchange them for collective titles. Mets fans would also prefer a team performance that will lead them to conquer the World Series, which has eluded them since 1986, almost 40 years ago
