Juan Soto and Fernando Tatis Jr. show why the Dominican Republic could win the World Baseball Classic

The Dominican Republic national baseball team promised energy, confidence and plenty of noise heading into the World Baseball Classic. In their opening game of pool play, they delivered on all of it.

Led by stars like Juan Soto and Fernando Tatis Jr., the Dominican Republic powered past Nicaragua national baseball team with a convincing 12-3 victory Friday night, turning a tight game into a showcase of one of the deepest lineups in international baseball.

Before the tournament began, Soto had made it clear the team intended to enjoy the experience. As they prepared for the opener, he said the Dominican players planned to have fun throughout the tournament. Tatis added that the team would be loud, and that prediction proved accurate once the bats started heating up.

Junior Caminero steps up to the plate

The loudest moment came from rising slugger Junior Caminero, whose bat helped swing the game decisively in the Dominican Republic‘s favor. Caminero, a power-hitting prospect in the Tampa Bay Rays organization, delivered the turning point in the sixth inning with a towering two-run home run that traveled 414 feet to center field. The blast broke a tie and shifted the momentum fully toward the Dominican side.

Dominican manager Albert Pujols praised the young slugger afterward, noting that the 22-year-old thrives in high-pressure moments. Pujols said the best thing about Caminero is that he is not afraid of the spotlight and actually enjoys being in those situations. The manager described the home run as only a glimpse of what the young hitter could bring to the tournament.

Caminero admitted the moment overwhelmed him emotionally. While rounding the bases, he said he barely heard the crowd because of the adrenaline, and he became emotional when he returned to the dugout. His home run celebration matched the energy in the stadium. Caminero slowly made his way around the bases, jumping and gesturing toward the crowd before being greeted at home plate by teammates including Julio Rodríguez and Tatis.

A never-ending celebration

The atmosphere inside the ballpark reflected the significance of the matchup. Thousands of Dominican fans packed the stands, though Nicaragua supporters also showed up in strong numbers, creating an energetic environment from the opening pitch. Pujols said that passion is exactly what the Dominican team expects throughout the tournament, especially with games taking place in baseball-loving cities like Miami.

He explained that baseball is deeply ingrained in Dominican culture, adding that the country lives and breathes the sport and that fans will continue to show that enthusiasm throughout the competition. For the Dominican Republic, the win served as both a statement and a preview of what could come next.

With stars like Soto, Tatis, Guerrero and Rodríguez leading the lineup, the team has entered the tournament determined to enjoy the moment while chasing another international title. If the opening game was any indication, they plan to do it loudly.
