Joshua vs Paul betting odds: How close is the fight really?

As the 19 December bout between Anthony Joshua and Jake Paul approaches, betting odds have sparked widespread discussion.

Despite Joshua‘s extensive experience as a world-class heavyweight, some sportsbooks are offering surprisingly close lines, prompting questions about what factors are influencing the market.

Anthony Joshua, a former two-time unified heavyweight champion, is listed as a heavy favorite at -1200 on DraftKings, while Jake Paul is set at +700.

At first glance, many observers find the odds closer than expected given Joshua‘s professional boxing credentials and track record of defeating high-level opponents such as Dillian Whyte, Francis Ngannou, and Alexander Povetkin.

Several factors could explain the narrower margin. Joshua‘s recent losses to Daniel Dubois and Oleksandr Usyk highlight vulnerabilities that may concern bettors.

In particular, the Dubois fight raised questions about Joshua‘s durability and timing in the ring, as he was knocked down multiple times.

Additionally, Joshua will be required to meet a contractual weight limit of 245 pounds, slightly below his recent fight weights, which could influence performance.

Jake Paul’s market impact

Jake Paul has built a notable professional record, often facing opponents with limited experience in high-level boxing.

While his skill level remains below that of Joshua, Paul‘s popularity and the volume of bets placed on him have affected the odds. Sportsbooks frequently adjust lines to balance betting activity, meaning high interest in Paul could contribute to his +700 placement.

Joshua‘s extended layoff of 15 months between fights also plays a role. Ring rust is a concern for any boxer, particularly in a high-stakes matchup, and could influence both performance and public perception.

Meanwhile, Paul, at 28, enters the fight with minimal exposure to damaging punches in his career, giving bettors confidence in his durability for this bout.

Even with these factors, analysts agree that Joshua remains the clear favorite. While the odds are closer than some expected, the professional experience, skill set, and knockout power of Joshua continue to set him apart from Paul.

The fight is shaping up as a test of both talent and strategy, with odds reflecting a combination of public interest and genuine uncertainties about the matchup.
