Josh Simmons gets love from the Chiefs: a new teammate for Mahomes?

After falling short in Super Bowl LIX, the Kansas City Chiefs are prioritizing areas for improvement, and reinforcing the offensive line is at the top of the list.

Patrick Mahomes faced relentless pressure in the championship game, highlighting the need for stronger protection. One potential solution could come from the 2025 NFL Draft, with Ohio State offensive tackle Josh Simmons emerging as a player to watch.

Though nothing is official, Simmons recently followed both Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs on Instagram-an action that, while small, has sparked speculation about whether Kansas City could be targeting him as a future lineman for their franchise quarterback.

Josh Simmons has major potential

At 6-foot-5 and 310 pounds, Simmons has the size and athleticism that NFL teams covet in an offensive tackle. His career began at San Diego State, where he played right tackle before transferring to Ohio State, where he switched to left tackle.

He became an integral part of the Buckeyes‘ offense but was sidelined for part of 2024 due to a knee injury. Despite that setback, he still earned All-Big Ten honorable mention and has established himself as a top prospect heading into the draft.

Scouts have praised his footwork, versatility, and ability to play both tackle positions, making him an ideal option for teams needing help along the offensive line. However, his technique against power rushers remains an area for development.

His agent, Drew Rosenhaus, has stated that Simmons is fully prepared for training camp and is projected as a first-round selection in April’s draft.

The Chiefs hold the 31st overall pick, but given Simmons‘ potential, they may need to trade up if they want to secure him. The 2025 NFL Draft is set for April 24-26 in Green Bay, and Kansas City will have a big decision to make.

Super Bowl struggles highlight need for O-line reinforcements

Kansas City’s offensive line had been strong throughout the season, helping the team reach another Super Bowl. However, their protection collapsed against the Eagles, with Mahomes facing pressure on 40.5% of his dropbacks.

The Eagles’ defense replicated the Tampa Bay Buccaneers‘ strategy from Super Bowl LV, attacking the offensive line and forcing Mahomes into difficult situations.

Former NFL receiver Julian Edelman noted the similarities, saying: “It felt a lot like the last time the Chiefs lost in the Super Bowl. Mahomes was under constant pressure, just like against the Buccaneers.”

This defeat underscored the need for Kansas City to rebuild the offensive line if they want to return to championship form.

Whether Simmons is the answer remains to be seen, but his talent and recent social media activity suggest he could be a name to watch for the Chiefs on draft night.
