With mandatory NFL training camps just around the corner, teams are beginning to prepare for a new season.
This also marks the start of assessments and goal-setting to tackle new challenges, both individually and for each franchise.
In line with this, ESPN has released its annual list of the league’s best quarterbacks, based on the results of surveys of executives, scouts, and coaches in the sport. And this year, there was a surprising detail.
The revelation of the QBs
In each edition, one of them moves up the list. This year, he ranked second.
With nearly 4,300 total yards, 40 touchdowns, and six interceptions in 2024, Josh Allen of the Buffalo Bills made it clear that he deserved his Most Valuable Player award.
And if he’s second on the list… who’s ahead of him? Patrick Mahomes.
The Chiefs quarterback is entering his ninth season in the league. Last year, he was on the verge of becoming a three-time champion and racked up 3,928 passing yards, 26 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions.
However, this season things could change, as Mahomes’ reign is waning and Allen is showing great skill with the ball.
On the list, Pat got almost 60% of the votes, but last year he received all but one vote. Allen, on the other hand, seems to have put his poor performance in 2023 behind him and, with his performance last year, has climbed the ranks to second place in this ranking.
“He’s done it all,” an NFC personnel executive told ESPN. “He’s passed every test. He makes fewer mistakes and takes care of the ball. All he has left to do is win it all.“
With the Bills dominating the regular season and Kansas City dominating the postseason, fans are hoping that this year’s rivalry will turn things around and make things interesting.
Even Allen’s fans would like to see Buffalo’s victories over the Chiefs come in the postseason. Taking advantage of Josh’s growing potential, this could be the opportunity to beat Patrick.
However, Mahomes is coming off a painful loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl final. This has reawakened the beast, who is hungry for victory and could wreak havoc this season in order to lift the Vince Lombardi Trophy once again. In fact, in several recent interviews, he has mentioned that this is his goal. In addition, he continues to lead the NFL in virtually every passing category.
Without a doubt, it will be interesting to see how things unfold between these two quarterbacks.
