Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills have changed strategy to defeat Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs in the playoffs

Beating Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs remains the biggest challenge for Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills in their quest to reach the Super Bowl – the team’s ultimate goal. So far, Buffalo has suffered four straight playoff losses to Kansas City and simply hasn’t been able to defeat Andy Reid’s squad in January.

This season, the Buffalo Bills are clear favorites to reclaim the AFC East crown. Sportsbooks have them favored to win every regular-season game – but that’s not enough. They need to make it to the Super Bowl.

With 66 years of franchise history, the goal for 2025 is singular: reach and compete in the NFL’s biggest game. The Bills practically have everything in place – especially a quarterback like Josh Allen, who is coming off an MVP season and is widely regarded as one of the league’s best.

The Bills have built a strong defense

During this offseason, the Buffalo Bills strengthened their defense, most notably by signing veteran pass rusher Joey Bosa to a one-year, $12 million deal.

Jarrett Bailey of Sporting News analyzed the Bills’ strategy and concluded that they made the right moves – taking the first step toward finally defeating Patrick Mahomes in January.

“They changed their team-building strategy this offseason, focusing heavily on the defensive side of the ball,” Bailey wrote. “If they can get to Patrick Mahomes when they inevitably face each other again in the playoffs, that will be the key ingredient to getting over the hump.”

The Bills also welcomed back Tre’Davious White and Dane Jackson, and used their first- and fifth-round picks to draft cornerbacks Maxwell Hairston and Jordan Hancock. They’re building an army to stop Mahomes.

Another prediction from Bailey is that Josh Allen will surpass 50 total touchdowns, which would once again make him a strong MVP candidate. One thing is certain: Buffalo’s biggest goal is to beat the Chiefs in the playoffs. If they can do that, they could make history.
