Former New York Mets player Jose Reyes demanded a lifetime contract for Pete Alonso, while the Polar Bear himself asked to leave the Mets.

As soon as the New York Mets were eliminated last Sunday, September 28, 2025, when they completed their collapse in Miami against the Marlins, Pete Alonso said he would opt out of his 2026 contract and go to free agency in the next offseason, which begins the day after the 2025 MLB World Series ends.

Jose Reyes demands lifetime contract for Pete Alonso while he himself asks to leave the Mets

Speaking to TMZ Sports, Jose Reyes was full of praise for the first baseman, who recently became the franchise’s all-time home run leader, surpassing Daryl Strawberry.

“He earned it,” Reyes said, suggesting that next offseason is the ideal time for the club to offer him a massive long-term deal, so Alonso can finish his career in Queens.

“They need to find a way to sign Pete Alonso. He plays every day, hits more than 40 home runs and drives in more than 100 runs. Who’s going to do that?” said Jose Reyes.

“He coming from the system, that’s something. It’s always good for the community, you know. He plays every day. It’s hard to find a player like that nowadays,” Jose Reyes.

Passion vs business

Despite the hope for a long-term deal, Jose Reyes acknowledged that baseball is a business and that the final decision rests with owner Steve Cohen and president of baseball operations David Stearns.

Although Pete Alonso has expressed his desire to retire in a Mets uniform, he has made it clear that the ball is in the management’s court. “It’s too early to tell,” said Jose Reyes, but added that if Alonso completes his entire career with the organization, “he would be in the top 10 of everyone who has worn a Mets uniform.”

How much is Pete Alonso projected to be worth?

According to projections, Pete Alonso is expected to seek a contract worth between $149 million and $180 million over a period of six to seven years.
