Jose Reyes asks Mets for lifetime contract for Pete Alonso: “He deserves it”

Former New York Mets player Jose Reyes has spoken out to urge his old team to secure Pete Alonso to a lifetime contract. Speaking to TMZ Sports, Reyes was full of praise for the first baseman, who recently became the franchise’s all-time home run leader, surpassing Daryl Strawberry.

“He’s earned it,” Reyes said, suggesting that next offseason is the ideal time for the club to offer him a massive long-term deal, so Alonso can finish his career in Queens.

Reyes’ Regret

Reyes, who spent most of his 16-year career with the Mets, shared his own experience of leaving the organization to join Miami in 2012, a decision he regretted.

His desire to have played his entire career in New York reinforces his belief that Alonso should be given that opportunity. The former shortstop highlighted Alonso’s consistency and worth, stating: “He comes from the system, that’s something. It’s always good for the community, you know. He plays every day. It’s hard to find a player like that nowadays”.

Passion vs business

Despite the hope for a long-term deal, Reyes acknowledged that baseball is a business and that the final decision rests with owner Steve Cohen and president of baseball operations David Stearns.

Although Alonso has expressed his desire to retire in the Mets uniform, he has made it clear that the ball is in the management’s court. “It’s too early to tell,” Reyes said, but added that if Alonso completes his entire career with the organization, “he would be in the top 10 of everyone who has worn a Mets uniform.”
