Jose Mourinho pinches the nose of Galatasaray boss Okan Buruk after defeat

José Mourinho’s Fenerbahce team was eliminated from the Turkish Cup after a 2-1 loss to rivals Galatasaray in the quarter-finals. The match ended in a significant scandal involving the Portuguese manager. The tense game saw ten yellow cards and three red cards issued, mostly to players on the bench, as tempers flared.

After the final whistle, with tensions still high, Mourinho confronted Galatasaray’s coach, Okan Buruk, and in the heated exchange, appeared to grab Buruk’s nose from behind. Buruk then dramatically fell to the ground, holding his face, which led to further confrontations between players and staff.

Mourinho’s post-match actions have drawn significant attention and could lead to sanctions. This incident recalls a similar controversy from 2011, when Mourinho, then managing Real Madrid, poked Tito Vilanova, Barcelona’s assistant coach, in the eye during a brawl. The Turkish derby, already known for its intensity, was further inflamed by this incident, requiring police intervention to prevent further escalation.

Galatasaray’s official social media accounts added fuel to the fire with a peculiar post directed at Mourinho. The post featured an animation of the manager experiencing insomnia, obsessively checking social media, crying, and ending up hospitalized. The caption read, “Galatasaray drives you crazy.” This post followed previous accusations from Galatasaray that Mourinho made racist comments after a prior match between the two teams, further highlighting the deep animosity between the clubs.

The racist allegations from Galatasaray, which Mourinho and Fenerbahce deny, have added another layer of complexity to the situation. Galatasaray claimed Mourinho used “unequivocally inhumane rhetoric” by referring to their bench as “jumping like monkeys.” Fenerbahce responded by filing a lawsuit against Galatasaray for “attacking Mourinho’s personal rights.”

While Galatasaray advances to the semi-finals of the Turkish Cup against Konyaspor, the other semi-final will feature Trabzonspor against the winner of the Besiktas vs. Goztepe match.
