Jonathan Kuminga trade buzz grows as Warriors target Pelicans star Trey Murphy III

The Golden State Warriors are once again active behind the scenes as the NBA trade window approaches. While the core led by Stephen Curry remains intact, the front office is clearly scanning the market for upgrades, particularly at forward. The goal is simple but demanding: stay competitive now without losing control of the future.

Jonathan Kuminga sits at the center of that tension. Drafted seventh overall in 2021, the athletic forward was expected to grow into a long-term pillar. Instead, his time in Golden State has been uneven. Flashes of dominance have been followed by long stretches of inconsistency, leaving both the coaching staff and the fanbase unsure of his role.

This season captured that uncertainty perfectly. Kuminga opened the year with energy and strong performances that earned him a starting spot under Steve Kerr. Then came a knee injury. When he returned, the rhythm was gone. His minutes shrank, his confidence dipped, and eventually he found himself out of the rotation entirely.

According to Sam Amick of The Athletic, the Warriors are now seriously considering using Kuminga as a trade asset to pursue New Orleans Pelicans forward Trey Murphy III. Amick reported that Golden State has long admired Murphy but remains unsure how the Pelicans value Kuminga, noting that league feedback has been mixed amid typical trade-season noise.

Really, the hardest part is, whether it’s going well or whether it’s not, (is) not losing your spirit… That’s been JK’s challenge as a young player. Things change so quickly, and there are all these declarations about who he is as a player, and does he fit, and all that type of stuff.

Why Trey Murphy III has the Warriors’ attention

Murphy has quietly become one of the most productive wings in the league. At 25, he is averaging over 21 points per game along with 6.4 rebounds and 3.4 assists, while shooting an impressive 48.6 percent from the field. His ability to defend multiple positions and space the floor makes him a natural fit in Golden State’s system. ESPN has also noted that Murphy’s contract, which could reach $112 million, aligns cleanly with the Warriors’ long-term salary structure.

Meanwhile, Kuminga’s situation has not gone unnoticed inside the locker room. Curry addressed the topic after Golden State’s win over the Chicago Bulls, emphasizing the mental challenge young players face when roles shift quickly. Speaking to NBA.com, Curry explained that staying mentally engaged is often the toughest part when expectations and opportunities fluctuate.

For quite some time now, the Warriors have been open about their desire to acquire the Pelicans’ Trey Murphy III

As trade discussions continue, other teams are paying attention. ESPN has reported that the Sacramento Kings are among those monitoring Kuminga’s availability should he hit the market after January 15. For the Warriors, the decision is delicate. Patience with potential or a decisive move for a proven contributor could define how this season, and possibly the remainder of the Curry era, unfolds.
