Jon Rahm’s future in jeopardy: DP World Tour fines and Ryder Cup eligibility at stake

Jon Rahm’s relationship with the DP World Tour is reaching a breaking point. After helping Europe reclaim the Ryder Cup in 2025, the Spaniard now faces the possibility of losing his tour membership. The reason is simple: he has refused to pay the fines imposed for joining LIV Golf without authorization.

Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton were able to play at Bethpage because their appeals froze their suspensions. But that protection is temporary, and the DP World Tour has made it clear that unpaid fines will not be ignored forever.

Former PGA Tour pro Smylie Kaufman voiced his frustration on The Smylie Show, saying, “There are rules in place. If you’re a member of this tour, you can’t go join a rival tour.” His comments reflect the growing tension between traditional tours and the Saudi-backed league that continues to divide professional golf.

The Appeal That Keeps Rahm in the Game

The DP World Tour requires permission before its members compete elsewhere, a rule that LIV players openly defied. Sanctions for those breaches can reach around $127,000 per event, and while many golfers chose to pay or resign, Rahm and Hatton have stood firm.

Rahm seemed unfazed earlier this year when asked about the issue, admitting with a smile, “I completely forgot about it, which is a good thing.” Yet that nonchalance could cost him dearly. If the appeals board rules against him, Rahm will lose his membership and, with it, his eligibility for the 2027 Ryder Cup at Adare Manor.

Despite being entitled to play on the DP World Tour, Rahm has chosen to step back for four months after a difficult season. Though he recorded 12 top-10 finishes, he failed to claim a single title for the first time since turning professional in 2016. His next competitive appearance is expected to be at LIV Golf’s 2026 season opener in Riyadh.

The DP World Tour has already rejected an offer from LIV Golf to settle players’ fines, signaling that it wants accountability rather than compromise. For Rahm, the choice is now crystal clear: pay the fines and protect his Ryder Cup legacy or stand firm and risk losing his place among Europe’s elite.
