Jon Gruden defended Sean McDermott after Bills fired him: “I’m really glad they lost the game”

The Denver Broncos eliminated the Buffalo Bills from the playoffs on Saturday after beating them 30-33 in overtime in the divisional round.

This result led to the dismissal of the team’s coach, Sean McDermott, a decision that was harshly criticized by a former Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach.

Gruden defends McDermott

Sean led Josh Allen and Buffalo for nine seasons, taking the team to its first playoffs after a 17-year drought, winning five division titles and setting eight winning records during his tenure with the team. However, less than 48 hours after the loss in Denver, he was fired.

In his recent appearance on “Wake Up Barstool,” former Las Vegas Raiders coach Jon Gruden addressed McDermott’s situation and didn’t mince words:

“Well, that makes me absolutely sick,” Gruden began. “I mean, I have no idea what the hell’s going on in this league. Good luck to Buffalo. And now, I’m really glad they lost the game, personally. I don’t think you can do much better than Sean McDermott.”

Jon also backed the now former Bills coach, saying that the biggest problem was the team’s defense and that he’s still shocked by the news:

“I mean, hell, their whole defense was beat up the whole year,” he said. “Their entire defensive line, their linebacking core, their secondary, you know, for them to fire Sean McDermott. After a season like this, I can’t say I’m surprised based on what I’ve seen owners do in the NFL the last several years, but this one really hits me hard,” Gruden added.

Meanwhile, McDermott’s contract extended into next year, which is why the Bills remain committed to the coach and will have to pay him about $1 million a month for the next two years.

Now, it remains to be seen who will be Buffalo’s new coach and whether McDermott will seek a new destination to continue his coaching career and, of course, which team will be under his command next.
