Johnny Cardoso (born September 20, 2001 in Denville, New Jersey) is now a new Atletico Madrid player. The American midfielder, who is on vacation in Brazil after playing in the Concacaf Gold Cup with the US national team, has signed with the Metropolitano club until 2030 and becomes a Rojiblanco player.
Atletico Madrid and Real Betis announced the agreement between the two clubs to make official the transfer of Johnny Cardoso. The American will be a Rojiblanco for five seasons and becomes Simeone’s number five. Cardoso is familiar with LaLiga, having played 65 games with Betis (45 in LaLiga), and his arrival fits in with the idea of the sporting management led by Carlos Bucero to find players who can rejuvenate the team and provide immediate performance.
As we said, Cardoso is on vacation with his family waiting to join the preseason with the rest of his new teammates. The American will be entitled to extend his vacation beyond July 21, when Atletico’s training begins, as his season ended later. It is not ruled out that he could bring forward his return and even join the group in Los Angeles de San Rafael
Cardoso convinced he will stay with Rojiblancos
The midfielder’s stance was key to his arrival at the Metropolitano. From the very first moment, the American player was excited about the option of wearing the red and white shirt and becoming the long-awaited ‘5’. It should be remembered that Tottenham had a preferential option for his signing since Betis formalized the arrival of Lo Celso. However, this clause was not executed precisely because of the will of the Brazilian-born American, since he had the last word. The decision to play for Atletico had been made some time ago.
With the arrival of Cardoso, Atletico have made their fourth signing official after Matteo Ruggeri, Alex Baena and Thiago Almada. The 23-year-old midfielder is making a big step in his career. After proving his potential at Betis, he will now have to prove himself at a club like Atletico, who are accustomed to playing in the Champions League.
