The John Harbaugh era with the New York Giants has begun with the decisiveness that characterizes the veteran head coach. In a move that marks a turning point in the franchise’s financial structure, Harbaugh has made his first major decision to begin freeing up cap space ahead of the 2026 Draft.
The decision was direct from Harbaugh: cutting ties with inside linebackerBobby Okereke. Despite the player arriving in the Big Apple on a four-year, $40 million contract in 2023, his performance in 2025 left much to be desired.
With a suffocating salary cap situation that left just $6.9 million available, the Giants needed breathing room. The decline of Okereke, who posted an alarming 13% missed tackle rate and mediocre run-defense grades (45.5 according to PFF), made the decision easier.
With this move, the team saves $9 million, allowing them to work toward new signings.
Harbaugh’s priorities: Three pillars for free agency
Although cost-cutting is necessary, Harbaugh is clear about the players who must lead the transition in 2026. During the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, the coach was firm about his desire to retain three impending free agents: right tackle Jermaine Eluemunor, wide receiver Wan’Dale Robinson, and cornerback Cor’Dale Flott.
“They’re all guys we want back,” Harbaugh stated. “You want players to return. Now the question is: ‘Do we have the means to bring them back? Is it a good use of resources – meaning the salary cap?'”
Eluemunor is coming off a solid season with more than 1,000 snaps played, while Robinson enjoyed a breakout year with 92 receptions for 1,014 yards.
Outlook for the 2026 Draft: Hunting for a generational linebacker
Okereke’s departure is not only a financial move; it is a tactical statement of intent. Harbaugh, faithful to his history in Baltimore with legends such as Ray Lewis and Roquan Smith, is searching for a “hunting dog” at the center of his defense. All eyes now turn toward April’s Draft, where the Giants hold the fifth overall pick.
The name raising excitement inside the Giants’ front office is Sonny Styles, the Ohio State star. Styles left a lasting impression at the Combine with a 4.46-second 40-yard dash and a 43.5-inch vertical leap.
