John Elway will not face charges following the death of his close friend and business partner, Jeffrey Sperbeck. The NFL legend had been under investigation for two months, but authorities concluded he was not responsible for the fatal accident.
April 26 marked a devastating day for Elway. While driving a golf cart at The Madison Club in La Quinta, California, Sperbeck fell from the vehicle and sustained fatal injuries. He was 62.
Sperbeck and Elway had shared a long history. They met in 1990 when Sperbeck began managing Elway’s career, later partnering in business ventures including restaurants, car dealerships, and their winery, 7Cellars by John Elway.
Sheriff: No criminal findings
Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco told KUSA-TV that the investigation found no evidence of foul play.
The coroner’s report cited “blunt force trauma” as the cause of death, confirming Sperbeck “fell from the golf cart.” Bianco added, “I’ve looked at the video 100 times, and there’s no explanation as to why he fell off-he just fell off.”
In a 9News interview, Bianco reinforced the conclusion: “We’ve talked to everyone involved and found nothing new. There was nothing criminal. It’s what we’ve said all along-this was a tragic accident.”
Elway mourns a beloved friend
The Denver Broncos icon has not commented publicly on the investigation’s resolution. However, in the days following the accident, he said he was “devastated and heartbroken by the passing of my close friend, business partner, and agent, Jeff Sperbeck,” and expressed condolences to Sperbeck’s family.
With the case closed, Elway begins to move forward-carrying the weight of one of the most painful chapters of his life.
