John Daly takes an unexpected tumble at the Cologuard Classic

At the greens of La Paloma Country Club on Sunday, twotime major champion John Daly lost his balance and slid headfirst down a sandy hillside during the final round of the Cologuard Classic on the PGA Tour Champions.

The 59-year-old, who has become as famous for his unpredictable exploits as his swinging power, escaped the tumble uninjured and later poked fun at himself on social media, much to the delight of fans and fellow competitors.

Daly‘s misadventure began near a green where his ball rested on a steep, rugged patch beside the fairway. Rather than taking a drop, he attempted a delicate chip directly from the tricky lie, a choice that would immediately backfire.

After making contact, Daly appeared to slip on the loose sand and toppled forward, disappearing from view as he slid down the embankment toward the desert brush. His caddie, Joel Cooley, didn’t hesitate to follow suit, scrambling after Daly to lend a hand.

But it was Daly‘s postfall reaction that resonated most widely. On Instagram, he shared the footage with a caption that leaned into the humor of the moment: “Bellyfloppin’ in the desert true buddy sliding in to save-> @joelcooleymusic.”

On the video of his fall, he wrote, “On today’s episode of jacka-,” directly likening the incident to the slapstick antics of the long-running comedy series Jackass.

Fans quickly responded online with relief that Daly was fine and appreciation for his trademark self-deprecation.

Amid laughter, respect for a rugged career

While Daly‘s playful approach to the mishap drew widespread attention, it also served as a reminder of the atypical career that made him one of golf’s most beloved figures.

Born in Carmichael, California, Daly has long stood apart from the sport’s polished image, earning the nickname “Long John” for his prodigious driving distance and building a fan base that appreciates both his talent and his irreverent style.

Daly‘s two major championships, the 1991 PGA Championship and the 1995 Open Championship, came at a time when he was largely an underdog, solidifying his reputation as a compelling and unpredictable competitor.

Today, he continues to compete mainly on the PGA Tour Champions, the circuit for professionals aged 50 and older, where his appearances reliably draw attention.

The Cologuard Classic itself is a respected event on the Champions schedule, having relocated in recent years to the scenic but demanding terrain of La Paloma Country Club in Tucson, Arizona.

The tournament, which attracts a blend of seasoned stars and passionate golf fans, has been played since 2015 and regularly features experienced competitors navigating its par-71 layout.

Despite the tumble, Daly finished the event tied for 29th at 6-under par, a respectable outing amid the laughter and viral clips circulating across social media.

Meanwhile, Steven Alker clinched the Cologuard Classic title in a playoff with Padraig Harrington, underscoring the competitive stakes that continue to shape the PGA Tour Champions season.
