Joe Milton balances NFL dreams with Cowboys and new role as a father

While Joe Milton, the Dallas Cowboys‘ backup quarterback, hasn’t been grabbing headlines for his on-field performance this season, a deeply personal event recently brought him into the spotlight for reasons far beyond football.

Known for his cannon arm rather than his playing time, Milton is now sharing one of the most special moments of his life: the birth of his daughter. His heartfelt message gives fans a glimpse of the man behind the pads, revealing a softer and more inspiring side to the young quarterback.

Milton‘s 2025 NFL season has been quiet in terms of game action. As the backup to Dak Prescott, who leads one of the league’s most explosive offenses, Milton has only thrown five passes so far this season.

Despite the limited playing time, his dedication to the game and preparation have remained intense. But off the field, Milton is experiencing a profound new chapter – fatherhood – which is reshaping his perspective on life and football alike.

A new beginning

Recently, Milton shared an emotional post on Instagram introducing his newborn daughter to the world and paying tribute to his partner, Destiny.

Milton expressed deep admiration and love for Destiny’s strength and resilience in post that featured moments from her pregnancy and their first moments with their new daughter.

“This was one of the best moments of my LIFE… To my love Destiny, you did an amazing job. You’re a very strong, amazing woman, and I know you’ll be a perfect mother through it all. I love you both ,” he wrote, capturing the joy and gratitude of this life-changing milestone.

At 25 years old, Milton‘s football journey has been marked by both talent and determination. Coming out of the University of Tennessee, he was initially overlooked by scouts despite showcasing freakish arm strength.

His talent is undeniable – he once threw a pass in practice that almost covered the entire field and unleashed a 61.7 mph rocket during his NFL debut in Week 18 of the 2024 season. Yet, his path to NFL success has required patience and perseverance.

Last season with the New England Patriots, Milton saw very limited action but had a standout moment in a tight win over the Buffalo Bills.

Reflecting on that day, Milton said, “After the Buffalo game, I was like, it’s fun. I feel like I can keep doing this. I feel like there is more that I need to let out. I was just having fun. It’s probably one of the best days of my life.”

Looking ahead, Milton’s role with the Cowboys remains flexible. While Dak Prescott continues as the team’s primary quarterback, Milton’s performances in training camp and preseason games will likely influence his trajectory.

The Cowboys‘ investment in Milton demonstrates their belief in his long-term potential and their commitment to cultivating talent that can contribute to the franchise’s success.

With the mentorship of seasoned teammates like Prescott and a coaching staff focused on player development, Milton is well-positioned to make a meaningful impact in the NFL in the coming seasons as his personal life also continues to develop.
