Joe Flacco vows loyalty to Browns after nightmare Baltimore return

Joe Flacco‘s first trip back to Baltimore as Cleveland Brown‘s starting quarterback was never going to be an ordinary Sunday.

The Super Bowl winner who once defined an era for the Ravens walked into familiar territory wearing different colors, tasked with leading a division rival against his former team.

What unfolded was a humbling 41-17 defeat that underscored Cleveland‘s early struggles and left Flacco confronting the toughest questions about his future in orange and brown.

The loss dropped the Browns to 0-2 for the first time in Kevin Stefanski‘s tenure, a jarring start for a team that entered September with playoff ambitions.

Baltimore turned three catastrophic Cleveland mistakes into touchdowns, transforming what could have been a tense divisional clash into a rout.

A blocked punt, a pick-six set up by Nate Wiggins’ 61-yard interception return, and a strip sack scooped up by linebacker Roquan Smith gave the Ravens 21 points that never had to be earned on offense. Stefanski, visibly frustrated afterward, offered no excuses.

“We gave them 21 points via a blocked punt, a fumble recovery and an interception. It’s just hard to win,” he told reporters. But he also drew a firm line under any speculation about the quarterback position.

Despite the ugly stat line, 25-of-45 for 199 yards, one touchdown, one interception and a fumble returned for six, Flacco is still the starter.

Flacco takes ownership but stays resolute

For Flacco, who turns 40 later this season, the game was less about nostalgia and more about accountability. He didn’t shy away from dissecting his costly interception, which came with the Browns trailing 13-3 and fighting to stay alive.

Flushed from the pocket and throwing on the run, he aimed for tight end David Njoku only to watch Wiggins jump the route.

“I thought I had a chance there,” he admitted afterward. “I thought if anything it would be incomplete… even if you feel pressured to make something happen, you can’t let that happen.”

It was a play that flipped the script entirely. Instead of clawing back, Cleveland found itself buried under a three-score deficit.

By the time Roquan Smith rumbled 63 yards with a loose ball for another Ravens touchdown, the contest was over. Yet in the face of boos and criticism, Flacco‘s message was one of resolve.

“It’s very easy to put your head down, tuck your tail between your legs and run off,” he said. “I just don’t see that in the guys in that locker room.”

If there was any doubt about where Flacco‘s allegiance lies, he silenced it in his postgame reflections.

“I’m a part of this locker room right now. And I’m on team with those guys. And I have relationships with this city, with the guys in that locker room. But man, I’m a Cleveland Brown right now. And I’m glad to be one,” he said.

Those words cut through the speculation that his return to Baltimore might stir divided loyalties. Instead, they reflected the mentality of a quarterback embracing a second act in his career, not reliving past glory.

“So grateful to be where I am… glad to go to battle with the side that I was on today,” he added.

Where do the Browns go from here?

The irony of Sunday’s defeat is that Cleveland’s defense did its part. Lamar Jackson and the Ravens were bottled up on the ground, finishing with just 45 rushing yards, their lowest total since Jackson became the starter. But no defense can withstand the avalanche of mistakes that buried the Browns.

The challenge now is avoiding a spiral. At 0-2, Cleveland faces mounting pressure to prove it can rebound, with a roster built to compete in a brutal AFC North.

Stefanski has doubled down on stability under center, but improvement must come quickly. The schedule only intensifies from here, and the Browns cannot afford to let turnovers and special teams miscues define their season.

For Flacco, the performance was a bitter reminder that the NFL has little patience for sentimentality. His return to Baltimore may have been emotionally charged, but his focus remains fixed on the present.

Leadership, accountability, and belief are the qualities he brings to a locker room now searching for answers.

Cleveland gambled on Flacco‘s experience to steady the offense in 2025. After Sunday’s bruising reunion, that bet looks more precarious, but the veteran’s words made clear he is not wavering.

The Browns, for better or worse, are his team, and he intends to fight for them until the end.
