Joe Flacco loses his privileged position with the Browns as Shedeur Sanders works to surpass another teammate

The Cleveland Browns‘ quarterback room is heating up faster than expected, and veteran Joe Flacco may no longer be sitting comfortably. The 2023 Comeback Player of the Year was once seen as a key stabilizing figure for Cleveland, but the emergence of rookie Shedeur Sanders has quickly reshaped the team’s internal dynamics.

Sanders, selected in the third round of the 2025 NFL Draft, has not only impressed the Browns coaching staff but also fans and analysts watching closely. His poise, athleticism, and command of the offense have placed him in direct competition with not only Flacco, but also offseason acquisition Kenny Pickett.

Initial projections had Sanders starting the season as a developmental backup behind Pickett and Flacco.

But as minicamps progress, the narrative is shifting. Reports from team insiders suggest that Sanders is showing starter-level potential and could soon leapfrog both Pickett and Flacco on the depth chart.

Competition intensifies in Browns’ QB battle

Flacco, who delivered a heroic late-season performance for the Browns in 2023, finds himself in an unfamiliar role. Despite his past success, the 39-year-old now faces mounting pressure from younger talent with more long-term upside.

Meanwhile, Pickett, formerly with the Steelers, is underwhelming in early sessions, opening the door even wider for Sanders.

The Browns coaching staff has made it clear that the best quarterback will play, regardless of experience. That bodes well for Sanders, who brings with him a strong pedigree and a mental toughness honed under his father, Deion Sanders, at Colorado.

It’s still early in the preseason, but one thing is becoming apparent: Joe Flacco‘s “privileged” position as the Browns’ trusted veteran may soon be a thing of the past. If Shedeur Sanders continues to perform at this level, Cleveland may be entering a new era under center faster than anyone expected.
