Joe Flacco called “Stupid” for refusing to mentor Shedeur Sanders and other quarterbacks on the Cleveland Browns

The Cleveland Browns face an unusual situation in the NFL, with four quarterbacks who could claim the starting role, yet none have emerged as the clear leader to take on this responsibility within the team.

While Shedeur Sanders is the most popular, Kenny Pickett and fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel are also in the mix, alongside Joe Flacco, who has refused to mentor the others, earning him sharp criticism.

Joe Flacco Called Out as Foolish

Though many believe that at 40 years old, Joe Flacco could take on a mentorship role for his teammates, he’s not convinced, as his clear goal is to win the starting quarterback job with the Browns.

This prompted a strong statement from ESPN’s Chris Canty, a former teammate of Flacco‘s with the Baltimore Ravens, who disagrees with his stance.

“Mentoring a young player is only going to make that player better, which makes the team better,” Canty said. “You’re only as strong as your weakest link.”

Canty, who played alongside Flacco with the Ravens from 2013 to 2015, added, “It’s stupid to not consider trying to do everything that you can to coach these other guys up. Nobody is saying you have to do your job at a lesser level in terms of performing on the field, but if you can happen to impart some wisdom onto those guys who you’re spending 16 hours a day with in training camp, why wouldn’t you do that?”

For many, it seems absurd that Joe Flacco refuses to act as what most consider a “good teammate,” especially given his history working with rookie quarterbacks like Lamar Jackson in 2018, Drew Lock in 2019, Sam Darnold and Zach Wilson between 2020 and 2021, and most recently Anthony Richardson with the Colts.
