Joe Burrow will never be Patrick Mahomes, and critics are already circling his record contract

The Cincinnati Bengals are navigating a busy offseason, working to retain key players who are essential to the team’s success and capable of delivering high-impact performances. However, the main storyline of the contract extension period centers on defensive end Trey Hendrickson, who has yet to sign a new deal.

Joe Burrow has publicly supported his teammate, while Hendrickson continues to hold the team responsible for the stalled negotiations. However, Burrow’s support has raised eyebrows, as some believe the team’s financial challenges stem, at least in part, from his record-setting contract.

Is Joe Burrow to Blame for the Bengals’ Stalled Contract Talks?

It is important to take into account that Joe Burrow’s multi-million-dollar contract has created financial challenges for the Bengals’ front office. The NFL quarterback star signed a 5-year extension contract worth $275 million that carries an annual value of $55 million, becoming the highest contract for an NFL player.

The question that continues to circulate is whether such an investment is truly justified for a quarterback who has yet to win a Super Bowl. ESPNanalyst Andrew Hawkins believes the lucrative deals for Joe Burrow and his two top receivers have not paid off as expected and may have directly complicated the Bengals’ ability to secure a contract extension for star pass rusher Trey Hendrickson.

“I think everyone’s had a hand in it. When you look at Joe Burrow, a top-five quarterback, there’s going to be holes in your team whenever you’re getting paid what you’re getting paid,” said Hawkins during the TV show, First Take.

Also, Andrew Hawkins talked about the influence of the contracts of Burrow and the two receivers. “More importantly, he made it very clear that he wanted his guys; he wanted Higgins and he wanted Chase. Get the deals done, I don’t care. So when that happens, now some of this is on your shoulders as well to make whatever the circumstances are… work.” He added.

Joe Burrow earns more than Mahomes. Is it worth it?

It’s remarkable to think that Joe Burrow is earning more than NFL superstar Patrick Mahomes. The Bengals quarterback is currently the league’s highest-paid player, with an average annual salary of $55 million, surpassing Mahomes’ $45 million per year deal.

For many critics, Burrow’s record-breaking salary remains the only area where he edges out the reigning Super Bowl champion. On the field, Patrick Mahomes has built a résumé few can match, with three Super Bowl titles and MVP honors in each of those championship games, along with a long list of individual accolades that cement his status as the league’s most dominant player. To date, Joe Burrow has yet to make a Super Bowl appearance.

Joe Burrow’s record-breaking contract is widely seen as one of the key obstacles preventing Trey Hendrickson from finalizing a new deal with the Bengals. The star defensive end has made it clear he stands firm on his value and what he believes he deserves, and for now, there’s no indication he intends to back down.
