Joe Burrow issues a stern warning to the Bengals after missing the Playoffs for third consecutive season

Joe Burrow did not soften his message as the Cincinnati Bengals approached their regular season finale.

With the playoffs officially out of reach, Burrow made it clear that the organization cannot afford to stay on its current path, calling for meaningful change after a third straight year without postseason football.

The Bengals’ slide stands in sharp contrast to where they were not long ago. Cincinnati reached the Super Bowl following the 2021 season and returned to the AFC Championship Game in 2022.

Since then, progress has stalled. Speaking ahead of Sunday’s matchup with the Cleveland Browns, Burrow acknowledged that incremental improvement is no longer enough.

“We don’t want to be in the spot we are in now, so something’s got to change,” Burrow said. “Whether it’s players we have continuing to improve and get better and play championship-caliber football or bringing in guys that will or whatever it may be. Obviously, something has to [change].”

Cincinnati opened the year with back-to-back wins before Burrow suffered a turf toe injury that sidelined him for nine games and disrupted any momentum.

Since returning, he has won three of his last five starts, and a victory over Cleveland would give the Bengals three straight wins to close the season, even if it does not alter the standings.

“This year, I’ve played however many games and we’ve won more than we’ve lost,” Burrow said. “And I feel good about that. All I can do is go out and when I’m out on the field, try to play well, try to win and go from there.”

Injuries and frustration shape a critical offseason

Health has been a recurring theme throughout Burrow’s career. After tearing his ACL as a rookie, he has battled through multiple setbacks in the years since. Since Cincinnati’s 2022 AFC title game appearance, the Bengals are 24-26 overall, and Burrow has missed 16 of those games due to injury.

That context has added weight to his recent comments. No matter what happens against the Browns, Cincinnati will finish with its worst record since Burrow’s rookie season. The reality has sharpened the quarterback’s tone and shifted the conversation toward accountability and direction rather than short term results.

Earlier this week, Burrow also addressed comments he previously made questioning whether this season had been “fun.” On Wednesday, his perspective was more reflective, acknowledging both the difficulty of being sidelined and the emotional swings that come with professional football.

“I think I have fun playing football,” Burrow said. “It’s certainly difficult when you can’t. And, you know, I had fun last year, too. Certainly frustrating at times. That’s life in the NFL. That’s life of playing sports. That’s why you play it. At the beginning, you feel emotions that you don’t feel in other parts of your life. Highs, lows, all the above, everything in between.”
