Joe Burrow continues to have a hard season, this time reaching a milestone. On Sunday, December 14, the Cincinnati Bengals were shut out 24-0 by the Baltimore Ravens, Burrow’s first shutout in his NFL career.
The painful loss officially eliminated Cincinnati from the playoff race for a third consecutive season, and with that comes the criticism and rumours about the future of a franchise filled with talent.
But after the game, the center of attention was their quarterback, Joe Burrow, who might have had another sad press conference, but contrary to that, the signal caller backed the coaching staff.
A lot of confidence.”… “Because I know how hard people work at it. We’ve got the right people. It starts with players playing better, and today it was me.
The Cincinnati star QB said to the media
He finished 25-of-39 for 225 yards, threw two interceptions (including a pick-six), and he couldn’t generate any rhythm to the offense. He blamed himself for the lack of points for his team.
Defense is the real problem in Cincinnati
The Bengals currently rank last in the NFL in several categories, including: Points allowed per game: 31.2, Total yards allowed: 403.8, Rushing yards allowed: 157.9
Cincinnati has struggled to find a competitive pace. The offense shows some flashes of greatness, and yes, they have a lot of talent there, but the defense is the one that doesn’t help, and now Burrow’s comments give a sense that changes are coming in terms of roster and not at the top.
“My comments had nothing to do with Cincinnati.”… “They had everything to do with me and my mindset in football.”
Burrow stated.
Ravens, the NFL eliminator
Sunday’s loss also gave the Bengals, alongside the Kansas City Chiefs and Minnesota Vikings, the distinction of being teams that have been eliminated by Baltimore, a constant of how dominant the Ravens have been lately. The frustration is amplified by the fact that Cincinnati opened the season 2-0, its best start under Taylor, before injuries derailed everything.
Joe Burrow had a huge injury, and then, the Bengals went 1-8, even after bringing in the veteran and Super Bowl champion, Joe Flacco. Under him, the offense was good, but again the lack of defense hurt them alll the way.
Now Cincinnati will have to look for the future, revamping the defense, maybe a change with the defensive coordinator, and bringing offensive linemen who can protect Joe Burrow and maybe just maybe finish the season with some wins, even if they don’t count for a Playoff spot.
