Joan Laporta takes another veiled shot at Lionel Messi and Barcelona fans don’t like it

Joan Laporta has once again found himself at the centre of discussion after making remarks that many supporters interpreted as a subtle dig at Lionel Messi. The newly re-elected president of Barcelona emphasized the club’s historic figures and long-term vision, but his tone reignited debate among fans who remain highly protective of Messi‘s legacy.

Laporta, who secured another term in office until 2031 after winning a commanding 68.18% of the vote against rival Víctor Font, enters his extended mandate with a strong backing from club members.

His decisive victory reflected confidence in his leadership despite lingering controversies tied to past decisions, particularly those surrounding Messi‘s departure in 2021 and the failed attempt to bring him back in 2023.

After winning the vote, Laporta reiterated that Messi‘s connection with Barcelona remains intact, stating that the forward will always be linked to the club in any capacity he chooses.

“Leo will be linked to Barcelona in whatever way he wants to be,” Laporta told TV3.

However, his emphasis on other legends and historical comparisons has been interpreted by some as a way of reframing the club’s identity beyond its most recent icon. That nuance has not gone unnoticed among supporters, many of whom still associate the club’s modern golden era directly with Messi‘s contributions.

Laporta has since expressed admiration for Johan Cruyff, describing him as the greatest player in football history. While intended as a tribute to one of Barcelona’s most influential figures, the statement has sparked debate due to Messi‘s extraordinary achievements during his time at the club.

The contrast between eras has become a recurring talking point whenever Barcelona’s legacy is discussed publicly.

Messi’s legacy remains central to Barcelona discourse

Messi‘s impact on Barcelona is difficult to overstate. Across 778 appearances, he scored 672 goals and played a defining role in a period marked by domestic dominance and European success.

Even after his departure, his presence continues to shape conversations about the club’s identity, ambitions, and leadership direction.

The election campaign itself saw Messi‘s name repeatedly invoked. Former Barcelona coach Xavi Hernández openly criticized Laporta, accusing him of mismanaging the situation surrounding Messi‘s attempted return in 2023.

Meanwhile, Font urged Messi to share his perspective on the matter, though the Argentine forward chose to remain silent throughout the political contest.

Despite the controversy, Laporta has consistently maintained that relations with Messi remain respectful. He has even suggested that the club should honour the player with a tribute match and a statue, placing him alongside figures such as Johan Cruyff and Ladislao Kubala, who already hold iconic status within the club’s infrastructure.

Fan reactions to Laporta‘s latest remarks highlight the emotional weight Messi still carries within the Barcelona community. While the president appears focused on shaping a forward-looking narrative for his tenure, supporters continue to measure the club’s present and future against the legacy left by one of the greatest players in football history.
