Espanyol’s heroic victory at the RCDE Stadium against Atletico Madrid had as protagonists Miguel Angel Rubio and Pere Milla, the architects of the comeback in a second half to forget for Simeone’s men. However, they were not the only ones who grabbed the attention in Cornella. An NFL legend was seen in the vicinity of the stadium, sharing a few beers with the fans. It was JJ Watt, a shareholder of Velocity Sports Limited, the group that acquired the club just over a month ago.

The former American player posted a message on social media in perfect Spanish after the team’s victory in the league opener, saying that “there will be many more beers in the future,” although he admitted that he will not be able to return “until February for work reasons,” coinciding with the end of the NFL and the Super Bowl. Watt currently works as a commentator for CBS Sports after retiring in January 2023.

The Wisconsin native thanked the support of the crowd and said the club is in “excellent hands with Alan Pace (owner of Velocity Sports Limited)”.

A long career in the NFL

Watt has been one of the great NFL references during his 12 seasons as a professional, spread between the Houston Texans and the Arizona Cardinals. In Texas, he played for a decade, establishing himself as the best defender of the year on three occasions (2012, 2014 and 2015).

In his country, he is considered a true sporting legend, although he never managed to reach the final rounds of the playoffs. His competitive ceiling was the second round, never reaching a Super Bowl or a conference final. Even so, he is recognised as one of the best players of the last decade.
