Jimmy Haslam says Deion Sanders molded Shedeur into a top quarterback

The Cleveland Browns are approaching the 2026 offseason with a clear, though somewhat controversial, strategy for their quarterback position, which has been under intense scrutiny.

At the NFL annual meetings in Phoenix on Monday, owner Jimmy Haslam confirmed the team plans to pursue a veteran-rookie competition, signaling their intention to retain Deshaun Watson despite his ongoing injury concerns.

Watson, who is guaranteed a $46 million salary this year, is recovering from his second Achilles tendon surgery in as many seasons.

While his health remains a major question mark, the organization is simultaneously focused on the development of Shedeur Sanders, the 2025 fifth-round draft pick who started the final seven games of his rookie season.

The decision to keep Watson is partly driven by financial considerations, but the Browns’ optimism is increasingly tied to Sanders’ growth.

Last season, the young quarterback faced a trial by fire, posting a 3-4 record as a starter behind a depleted offensive line. Haslam highlighted Sanders’ commitment during the offseason.

“He’s been in Cleveland most of the winter, and I think that says a lot for his dedication to wanting to be a NFL quarterback and understanding what it takes,” Haslam said.

“His body looks better. He’s been working hard. It’s hard for a lot of college kids to understand what it takes to play in the NFL and particularly quarterback. Shedeur got an education in that, and my instincts are he’ll come back ready to play.”

Upgrading the environment for a true assessment

A central component of the Browns’ 2026 strategy is removing the variables that complicated evaluations of both Sanders and fellow young quarterback Dillon Gabriel last year.

The front office has invested heavily in improving the offensive line, which struggled with injuries and performance issues in 2025.

By fortifying pass protection and planning to add new receiving weapons through the upcoming draft-just three weeks away-the organization hopes to create a stable environment where the quarterback competition can be judged fairly, based on talent rather than circumstances.

The Browns’ depth chart currently features three distinct quarterback archetypes: the high-priced veteran in Watson, the emerging pocket passer in Sanders, and the record-setting collegiate star in Gabriel.

While Gabriel is expected to remain through training camp, the team has not ruled out adding a fourth quarterback through the draft or undrafted free agency to further bolster competition.

This approach underscores Cleveland‘s commitment to both protecting its financial investments and giving its young talent a legitimate chance to develop.

By combining veteran leadership, a strengthened offensive line, and a structured competitive environment, the Browns aim to ensure the quarterback position is resolved on merit and potential rather than mere circumstance.
