Jimmy Butler injury update: Will he be ready for Warriors’ season opener vs. Lakers?

The Golden State Warriors are getting ready for their first full season with Jimmy Butler, and fans are eager to see what’s next. Since his midseason trade from the Miami Heat, Butler has been a game-changer for Golden State. The team went 23-7 after his arrival, and his competitive edge quickly became part of the Warriors’ identity.

After joining the team, Butler signed a two-year, $121 million extension that keeps him in the Bay Area through 2027. At 36 years old, he still played like a star. In 41 games for the Warriors, he averaged 18.3 points, 5.8 rebounds and 5.7 assists while shooting nearly 47 percent from the field. His intensity on both ends of the floor has made him a perfect fit beside Stephen Curry.

A setback just before the season starts

Butler’s momentum hit a small bump this month when he suffered an ankle sprain during preseason play. The injury seemed minor at first, but swelling forced him to sit out the team’s last two exhibition games.

According to The San Francisco Chronicle, an MRI showed no structural damage. Head coach Steve Kerr told reporters Thursday that Butler is “doubtful” for the preseason finale against the Clippers, but added that he is optimistic about Butler’s recovery.

Warriors hopeful for opening night return

Kerr said Butler has been taking part in light workouts and treatment sessions, and the team is giving him time to heal. Reports from Sports Illustrated and Athlon Sports noted that Butler’s condition is improving and that the Warriors expect him to be ready for the regular season opener against the Los Angeles Lakers on October 21.

If Butler plays, it will mark the start of what could be a defining year for Golden State. The veteran forward brings toughness, leadership and defensive energy-qualities the Warriors need to stay competitive in a crowded Western Conference.

Golden State knows what Butler can do when healthy. His ability to score, create and defend at a high level makes him one of the most valuable players on the roster. With the Lakers up first, the Warriors are hoping their new star is cleared in time to take the floor.
