Jim Furyk, captain of the 2024 United States Presidents Cup team, has confirmed that he did not consult Tiger Woods when selecting his six captain’s picks for the upcoming tournament.
Despite his long-standing friendship with Woods, Furyk made it clear that he made the decisions on his own, without seeking the input of the 15-time major champion.
Furyk, who is leading Team USA for the second time, previously captained the U.S. in the 2018 Ryder Cup, where they faced a surprising defeat in Paris.
However, the task at hand is different this time, as Team USA heads into the Presidents Cup, a competition they have dominated for decades.
The 15th edition of the tournament begins at Royal Montreal Golf Club in Quebec, Canada, with the U.S. heavily favored to secure another victory.
Furyk’s Team Selections and Expectations
With Team USA’s strong track record in the Presidents Cup, Furyk is hoping to continue the winning tradition. The U.S. has not lost a Presidents Cup since 1998, and they are once again the favorites to win.
The pressure is on Furyk and his team to deliver, but the captain’s wildcard selections, which include Max Homa, Sahith Theegala, Keegan Bradley, Tony Finau, Brian Harman, and Sam Burns, have sparked debate among fans and experts.
Furyk faced criticism for picking Homa, who has had a rough patch in recent months, over players like Justin Thomas and Akshay Bhatia.
However, Furyk defended his choice by pointing to Homa‘s stellar performances in recent Presidents Cup and Ryder Cup competitions, describing him as a key team player who helps bring the squad together.
No Consultation with Tiger Woods
When asked if he had reached out to Woods for advice on his captain’s picks, Furyk admitted that he had not.
“Tiger and I have been friendly over the years, but I didn’t give him a call to talk about the picks,” Furyk said. Woods last served as a captain in the 2019 Presidents Cup in Australia, but has since stepped back from such roles.
Woods is currently recovering from back surgery and is expected to return to competitive golf at the PNC Championship in December, alongside his son Charlie.
As Furyk leads his team into the 2024 Presidents Cup, all eyes will be on his captaincy and whether Team USA can maintain its dominance in the competition.
