Jets’ quarterback gamble? Surprise draft twist puts Ty Simpson in doubt

The closer the 2026 NFL Draft gets, the less certain the New York Jets appear about their next quarterback. What once looked like a straightforward pursuit of Ty Simpson has quietly evolved into something far less predictable, with the franchise now weighing a more unconventional path.

New York Jets front office had done its homework on Simpson, bringing the Alabama standout in for a private workout as they explored whether he could become the long-term face of the organisation.

But recent developments suggest that confidence may not be as strong as first believed. Instead, Drew Allar has emerged as a legitimate alternative after his own visit, adding a fresh layer of intrigue to the New York Jets draft plans.

According to ESPN, the New York Jets could consider targeting Allar in the middle rounds, potentially as late as the fourth. Such a move would signal a clear shift in approach, especially given Simpson had previously been viewed as one of the top quarterbacks in this year’s class.

Simpson trajectory has become one of the more fascinating subplots of this draft cycle. After a strong season that saw him throw for over 3,500 yards and 28 touchdowns, the Alabama quarterback initially appeared locked in as the second-best prospect behind Fernando Mendoza.

Yet behind the scenes, league sentiment has been less definitive. Reports indicate several teams do not hold a first-round grade on Simpson, raising the possibility that he could slide into Day 2.

That uncertainty has opened the door for teams like the New York Jets to reconsider whether investing a premium pick is the right move. For a franchise that cannot afford another misstep at quarterback, hesitation is understandable.

Allar offers upside at a different price point

Allar case is built more on potential than production. The Penn State signal-caller entered last season with high expectations but endured a difficult campaign that included a season-ending ankle injury and instability within the program.

Still, his physical tools remain hard to ignore. At 6-foot-5 with a powerful arm and prototypical build, Allar fits the mould of a developmental quarterback who could thrive with time and the right system.

For the New York Jets, selecting him later in the draft would allow them to strengthen other areas of the roster early while still taking a calculated swing at the position.

It’s a strategy that reflects a broader trend across the NFL, where teams are increasingly willing to separate value from urgency when it comes to quarterbacks.

Defining decision for a rebuilding franchise

Head coach Aaron Glenn enters a crucial season after a difficult start to his tenure, and the quarterback decision will likely define how quickly the New York Jets can move forward. Veteran Geno Smith provides a short-term bridge, but at 35, he is not viewed as the long-term solution.

Complicating matters further, New York Jets has also been linked with top defensive prospects such as David Bailey early in the draft.

If the New York Jets prioritise immediate impact with their first selection, it would increase the likelihood of addressing quarterback later, making someone like Allar an even more attractive option.

The result is a draft outlook filled with uncertainty but also opportunity. Simpson remains firmly in the mix, but he is no longer the clear answer he once seemed to be.

For the New York Jets, the decision now is not just about choosing a quarterback. It is about choosing a direction.
