Jets’ draft hopes shaken as Giants reshape the QB board

The Jets’ 42-10 loss to the Patriots barely moved the needle in a season that has felt finished for months. At 3-13, the outcome changed nothing about where the franchise stands competitively. The playoffs were never part of the picture, and the standings have long since stopped mattering.

But while the game itself faded quickly, the broader implications of Sunday did not. For the Jets, this point in the calendar is no longer about wins or losses. It is about draft position, probability, and watching other teams just as closely as their own.

That is where the Giants entered the picture. Their 34-10 win over the Raiders did more than end another week on the schedule. It reshaped the top of the 2026 NFL Draft. With that result, Las Vegas is now positioned as the most likely holder of the No. 1 overall pick. For the Jets, whose chances of climbing that high were already thin, the math just became less forgiving.

Why the Giants suddenly matter more than ever

The Jets are still alive in the race for the top pick entering Week 17, but realistically, they are trending toward a selection somewhere in the top five. In most drafts, that is a strong place to be. This year, it may not be enough.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Giants are no longer assumed to be out of the quarterback market. Speaking this week, Rapoport said New York is expected to evaluate all options, including top quarterback prospect Fernando Mendoza, if it lands the No. 1 pick.

That report caught attention around the league because the prevailing belief had been that the Giants were prepared to continue building around Jaxson Dart. Dart has shown enough growth to suggest stability, which is why many analysts at ESPN and The Athletic previously viewed New York as a team unlikely to draft a quarterback at the very top.

Assumptions may no longer hold

If the Giants seriously consider Mendoza, the Jets’ situation tightens. The ideal outcome for New York was always the Giants picking first and passing on a quarterback, creating flexibility through trades or a potential slide. A quarterback-needy Raiders team at No. 1 already complicated that plan. Now the Giants could do the same.

There is also the possibility that this is strategic positioning. As noted by evaluators at Pro Football Focus, early quarterback interest can be used to spark bidding wars. Even so, the Jets cannot afford to ignore the risk.

With one week left in the regular season, the Jets are not just watching their own results. They are tracking rivals, draft scenarios, and a quarterback market that is suddenly far less predictable. In a year filled with setbacks, this one may linger the longest.
