There is no doubt that the Dallas Cowboys’ defense was an outright failure in 2025 under Matt Eberflus as defensive coordinator. They ranked last among all franchises. This left Jerry Jones and company embarrassed.
Because of this, during the offseason, they are searching for the best available pieces to bring into the franchise, hoping to begin shaping a new defensive unit, something the team clearly needs.
Several defensive backs have already been signed by the Cowboys, and Rashan Gary was acquired via trade. The edge rusher is expected to provide significant support to the team.
Although many more key pieces are still needed on the defensive line, there is time to continue rebuilding the entire front. That is why Dallas’ front office has not rested in its efforts to bring in players who can restore the team’s strength.
Jerry Jones targets Travon Walker
Travon Walker has now appeared on the Cowboys’ radar. The player, who entered the league in 2022 via the draft out of the Georgia Bulldogs, is heading into what is described as his fifth-year option at $15.2 million.
There has been no contract extension for the player, and everything appears to be stalled. Additionally, the Jaguars are facing salary cap complications, as they only have $8 million available for 2026.
Because of this, a trade between Jacksonville and Dallas could be a viable option for the player.
For whatever reason, the Jaguars have been slow to sign Walker to an extension, so one would have to think they’d at least consider a trade offer, especially if they were able to replace him in the draft.”… “Without a first-round pick, perhaps they’d be interested in swap that included Walker and Dallas’ No. 20 selection.

Although he is not a player who has consistently proven to be dominant at his position, his early numbers were modest:
- 3.5 sacks
- 49 tackles
- 15 games as a rookie
What became important was his development afterward. He appeared to shed the hesitation and nerves of his first year, producing much stronger numbers:
- 2023
- 10 sacks
- 52 tackles
- 2024
- 10.5 sacks
- 61 tackles
- 13 tackles for loss
- 35 yards on a touchdown return
In 2025, a wrist injury significantly affected him. He required surgery to correct the issue. Later, another physical setback arose. In Week 11 against the Los Angeles Chargers, he was sidelined for two games. Despite everything, his season was not entirely poor:
- 3.5 sacks
- 38 tackles
- 14 games
A trade could ultimately be completed, and the Cowboys would gain a solid player as they look to strengthen their defense heading into the 2026 season.
