Jerry Jones praises Troy Aikman’s new role with the Miami Dolphins

Troy Aikman, the Hall of Fame quarterback renowned for leading the Dallas Cowboys to three Super Bowl victories, is preparing for another exciting chapter in his legendary career.

After nearly 24 years as a broadcaster following his retirement from professional football, Aikman is now also taking on an administrative role with the Miami Dolphins. The team has brought him on as a consultant to assist in their search for a new general manager this offseason.

This shift comes as the Dolphins aim to revamp their front office after parting ways with longtime GM Chris Grier, who had served in Miami since 2016. Grier was dismissed following a 2-7 start to the 2025 season, leaving Champ Kelly as the interim GM.

The Dolphins now seek a permanent replacement, and Aikman‘s involvement will provide a respected, outside perspective during the search process. His decades of experience in the NFL, both on and off the field, make him an ideal advisor for the organization’s leadership team.

Aikman shared his excitement about the new opportunity in a social media post celebrating the new year.

“Thankful for 2025 and what’s to come in 2026,” he wrote, accompanied by a photo with his daughters.

The post highlights not only his enthusiasm for the Dolphins’ project but also his readiness to embrace new challenges beyond the broadcasting booth.

While this role is temporary and focused exclusively on the GM search, it underscores Aikman‘s continued influence within the league decades after his playing career ended.

Aikman provides guidance but maintains broadcasting role

Even as he steps into this advisory capacity, Aikman will maintain his role as an ESPN analyst, covering Monday Night Football. He will balance his broadcasting duties with meetings and interviews as part of the Dolphins’ search team.

This dual responsibility reflects the modern approach of leveraging experienced football minds in strategic roles while allowing them to continue media careers, similar to how the Washington Commanders consulted former NBA executive Bob Myers during their 2024 coaching and GM searches.

Jerry Jones, Aikman‘s former Cowboys owner, expressed pride and support for the Hall of Famer’s new role.

“I’m so proud of him and what he did with the Cowboys, proud of what he is in the NFL,” Jones said. “He’s had a great career, no matter how you count it. I’ve always appreciated having him on my side, our side. Obviously, he has to have an even hand with his job now as a broadcaster. I will say that he is certainly capable of helping any team in whatever capacity it is.”

By joining the Dolphins’ front office search, Aikman continues to demonstrate his versatility and commitment to football. From a Super Bowl-winning quarterback to a respected broadcaster and now a strategic advisor, Aikman‘s career trajectory highlights the wealth of football knowledge he has.

While his role in Miami is temporary, it may open doors to future opportunities in team management, cementing his influence in yet another aspect of the sport he helped define.
