Jerry Jones is a man with a plan: Cowboys send an early off-season message with these surprising moves

The Dallas Cowboys have wasted no time in securing their rookie class, announcing on Friday that seven of their nine draft picks have officially signed their contracts. Leading the group is first-round selection Tyler Booker, an offensive guard out of Alabama, who inked a four-year, $22.5 million deal, including $13 million guaranteed. The swift signings mark a proactive approach from Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, who has ensured that most of his draft class is set before rookie minicamp begins.

Booker, taken 12th overall, expressed excitement about getting his contract finalized and starting his journey in the NFL. Speaking to Todd Archer of ESPN, Booker emphasized that his focus was on getting to work, rather than contract negotiations. “We know that this rookie contract is just, Lord willing, the first of a couple that I have coming in front of me. I was just focused on getting to work. I wasn’t too worried about the little extremities,” he said. Booker credited his agent for handling the details, noting that he simply wanted to get on the field and prove himself.

Along with Booker, the Cowboys secured third-round cornerback Shavon Revel, fifth-round linebacker Shemar James, sixth-round offensive tackle Ajani Cornelius, and three seventh-round picks, defensive tackle Jay Toia, running back Phil Mafah, and defensive tackle Tommy Akingbesote. These additions strengthen both offensive and defensive depth, giving Dallas promising young talent to develop.

Still some work to be done

However, two draft picks have yet to sign their rookie deals, second-round defensive end Donovan Ezeiruaku and fifth-round running back Jaydon Blue. While negotiations are expected to be completed soon, these remain the final pieces before Dallas can fully close out its draft business. The Cowboys have historically moved quickly in securing their picks, and this year is no different, as rookies prepare for their introduction to the NFL.

Dallas heads into rookie minicamp with an optimistic outlook on how these players will fit into the team’s strategy. Booker is expected to make an immediate impact on the offensive line, while the Cowboys’ defensive selections address crucial gaps in stopping the run and improving coverage. With training camp on the horizon, head coach Brian Schottenheimer will soon assess the newest additions and determine where they fit best.

As the Cowboys continue shaping their roster for the upcoming 2025 season, the focus now shifts to development and competition. While the front office has secured most of its draft class, the real test will come in training camp, where these rookies will need to prove themselves worthy of contributing to Dallas’ playoff aspirations.
