Jerry Jones eyes veteran LB as the Cowboys’ defensive savior for 2026

When the free agent market opens this spring, one name that could dominate conversation among Dallas Cowboys fans and front office personnel is one of the most consistent inside linebackers of the past decade and a half.

Ten-time Pro Bowl linebacker Bobby Wagner has just wrapped a remarkable season with the Washington Commanders, tallying 162 total tackles, 4.5 sacks, two interceptions, and four passes defended in 2025.

At 35 years old, Wagner remains one of the most productive defenders in the league, a stat sheet filler whose instincts and leadership have carried him through 14 NFL seasons with elite performance metrics and a championship pedigree.

The decorated veteran has built a Hall-of-Fame-caliber resume during his NFL career, known for his elite football IQ, tackling ability and command of the defensive huddle. For a Cowboys team trying to maximize its championship window, a player like Wagner could be the stabilizing force the defense needs.

Why Bobby Wagner could be a perfect fit

Even late in his career, Wagner continues to perform at a high level, proving that experience and instincts can often outweigh raw athleticism.

His ability to read offenses, diagnose plays quickly and communicate adjustments could immediately elevate the Cowboys defense.

For a Cowboys defense already stacked with talent on the edges, adding a cerebral linebacker in the middle would help create balance.

Beyond the on-field production, Wagner’s leadership could be just as valuable. The Cowboys have one of the league’s most talented rosters, but critics often point to inconsistent discipline and communication as issues during high-pressure moments.

Adding a respected veteran like Wagner could help address those concerns.

There is also the financial angle to consider. Because he is no longer in the early stages of his career, Wagner could potentially be signed to a shorter-term deal that allows the Cowboys to maintain flexibility while still strengthening a key defensive position.

Of course, no deal is imminent, and Dallas will likely evaluate multiple options as the offseason unfolds. But the idea of pairing Wagner with the current defensive core is one that has already caught the attention of analysts and fans alike.

If Jones ultimately pulls the trigger on a move like this, it would signal that the Cowboys remain fully committed to building a defense capable of competing for a championship in the coming seasons.

For a franchise still chasing its first Super Bowl appearance in decades, adding a battle-tested veteran could be exactly the kind of move that helps push the team closer to that long-awaited breakthrough.
