Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones gave fans a reason to smile this week. When asked about the team’s injured players, wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, return specialist KaVontae Turpin, and offensive lineman Tyler Booker, the outspoken executive offered a positive update that suggests the Cowboys could have their key weapons back in action soon.
Without being a doctor here and without the benefit of a week of practice, we are thumbs up on all. It’s looking good, but that’s just it, you gotta have a week of practice.
Jones said.
That encouraging outlook means the Cowboys are close to having their lineup at full strength. Their depth and offensive rhythm have been inconsistent in recent games, and these returns could help stabilize the unit as they prepare for a crucial Sunday Night Football matchup against the Washington Commanders.
In their last outing against the Carolina Panthers, Dallas fought hard but ultimately fell short despite a strong performance from receiver George Pickens. Former Cowboy running back Rico Dowdle, now with Carolina, played a key role in handing his old team the loss, reminding them just how much his physicality and determination can change a game.
Reinforcements and key adjustments
With Lamb, Turpin, and Booker expected to return, the Cowboys should regain much of their offensive firepower. Lamb’s explosiveness as a deep threat and Turpin’s versatility in the return game could be game changers, while Booker’s presence on the offensive line would provide much-needed protection and stability. Still, Dallas will need to tighten up its run defense after being dominated by Dowdle in the previous game.
On Turpin’s value, Stephen Jones, Jerry’s son and the team’s executive vice president, highlighted how essential he is to their game plan.
He’s an All-Pro as a returner, so I’d say he’s pretty important. … When you’ve got great players at the position and they’re not out there, you’re not going to be as good. He’s one of the best in the business, and it’ll be great to get him back.
Jerry Jones’ restructuring strategy
The Cowboys have been reshaping their roster after trading star linebacker Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers. The move netted them two future first-round draft picks and cleared valuable salary-cap space, resources that Jones intends to use strategically.
If we can improve our team and it makes sense for what we give up in the future, all of it’s there. We have major… resources that we wouldn’t have had had we not made that trade. … I promise you… our eyes really opened to ways we can help this defense and certainly don’t want to preclude anything on offense either.
There’s nothing untouchable in our resources to help our team. And there’s no way that I’m at a point right now to where I would not do something because of where we are into the season, six games. I would go as early as I would if we were talking three games back.
Now, as Dallas prepares to face Jayden Daniels and the Commanders on Sunday night, they’ll finally have more weapons available and a renewed sense of optimism.
