Jerry Jones clings to total control of the Cowboys as general manager

Since purchasing the Dallas Cowboys in 1989, Jerry Jones appointed himself as the team’s general manager. Today, more than three decades later, he remains in that position with the same stubbornness that has defined him, ignoring the criticism that has surrounded his tenure for years.

This week, when asked if he had ever considered stepping down, Jones responded with a mix of irony and conviction: “Momentarily… little fractions of a second, I promise you,” he told Fox4News. With that, he made it clear that at 81 years old, he intends to keep making all football-related decisions within the organization.

Dallas Cowboys and the long reign of Jerry Jones

Jones justifies his continued presence in the role based on experience rather than formal credentials. “I don’t apologize one bit for being where I am,” he said. “I have the passion and the background. I don’t apologize one bit to the guy I see in the mirror.”

However, his “background” comes solely from the time he has spent as general manager, since he had no prior football experience when he gave himself the job. That detail has been a constant source of controversy among NFL experts and fans-especially given the team’s lack of on-field success over the past two decades.

Who can hold Jerry Jones accountable?

This isn’t the first time the need for Jones to step aside has been raised. In a 2012 interview with Bob Costas, he was asked if, as owner, he would fire the general manager-in other words, himself. Jones replied candidly: “I think so, because he was there to be fired.”

The problem, as he pointed out, is that an owner can’t fire himself. And in Dallas, where the owner also acts as the general manager, that creates a structure with no internal checks or real accountability.

Cowboys fans’ frustration continues to grow

In a storied franchise like the Cowboys, fans have witnessed how the absolute power of their owner limits the team’s ability to evolve. While other organizations make football decisions based on logic and analysis, Dallas continues to revolve around the will of one man.

The phrase says it all: there’s no job security like holding the majority stake. And for Cowboys fans, there’s no greater sense of helplessness than watching Jerry Jones’ stubbornness continue to hold back the true potential of the franchise.
